Cops: Dad ordered to pay child support killed son
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans police say a man who told police that armed gunmen kidnapped his 2 1/2-year-old son is now accused of killing the boy because he was ordered to pay child support.
Superintendent Warren Riley says the father - 22-year-old Danny Platt of New Orleans - will be booked with first-degree murder of 2 1/2-year-old Ja' Shawn Powell.
Although police put out a notice Saturday asking people to look for the boy and describing him as kidnapped, Riley says the story never really added up.
He says investigators learned that Platt had threatened to kill either the boy or the child's mother if he was ordered to pay child support.
Riley says Platt eventually confessed to the killing and told officers where to find the body.
